1. First Vice Foreign Minister Lim Sung-nam will visit Senegal and Angola from September 27 to October 1, and discuss with high-level officials of the two countries ways to strengthen substantive cooperation in various areas, including politics, economy and development. Vice Minister Lim will also request the support and cooperation of the two countries, which are members of the UN Security Council, regarding North Korea’s nuclear and missile provocations.

In the meetings, the two sides will review the cooperative relations between the ROK and Senegal, and discuss the Korean Peninsula issue and other regional issues, as well as ways to increase cooperation on the global stage.

o Vice Minister Lim will express appreciation to Senegal, a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2016-2017 term, for contributing to the adoption of Security Council Resolution 2270 on North Korea, and for submitting a report on the implementation of the resolution. He will also ask Senegal to continue to join the international community’s sanctions on North Korea and efforts to put pressure on the North.

3. Following his visit to Senegal, Vice Minister Lim will visit Angola. On September 30, he will pay a courtesy call on Foreign Minister George Rebello Chikoti, and meet with Vice Foreign Minister Manuel Domingos Augusto and foreign policy advisor to the President Carlos Fonseca. In the meetings, Vice Minister Lim will ask for support to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue, and exchange views on ways to enhance substantive cooperation between the two countries in a range of areas.

o Vice Minister Lim will note with appreciation that Angola, as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2015-2016 term, contributed to the adoption of Security Council Resolution 2270. He will also request Angola continue to make efforts to implement the resolution as stated in the implementation report submitted by Angola.

4. Vice Minister Lim’s upcoming visit to the two African members of the Security Council is expected to further solidify cooperation among countries in the world to put pressure on North Korea in response to North Korea’s fifth nuclear test. It will also help more Korean companies do business in Africa, and contribute to further increasing bilateral cooperation by serving as an opportunity to share the ROK’s experience of economic development.
