1. The government of the Republic of Korea will offer humanitarian assistance worth some 500,000 US dollars to Haiti, where Hurricane Matthew on October 4 caused massive damage to its people and property.
2. The Haitian government, having declared October 8-11 as a period of national mourning, is working to recover from the hurricane with the support of the international community, including international organizations and the EU.
3. The ROK government, as a responsible middle-power country of the international community, is actively implementing “humanitarian diplomacy” as its signature “brand” of diplomacy in efforts to play a role in responses to such humanitarian crises as those involving refugees and natural disasters. The assistance from the ROK government is expected to help Haiti overcome the humanitarian crisis triggered by the hurricane.
